I know all this because I've a lifetime of experience in this game. And I'm willing to share it all with you through Rugby Coach Weekly.
Imagine...
It's Wednesday morning. You've not had time to work out a schedule for this afternoon's coaching session. You're unsure what schedule for this afternoon's coaching session. You're unsure what to coach. You don't want to let the lads down by doing the same routines... again.
Then you get an email from me with the latest issue. Its 4-pages are packed with carefully chosen strategies, practical tips and easy-to-implement drills. All of them tried and tested.
Each article in Rugby Coach Weekly concentrates on the essential information you need to know.
There are plenty of helpful diagrams and pictures to illustrate the important points being made. For instance, to show you how to position your players on the field, or to perform a particular skill or training exercise.
While it's brief and quick to read, Rugby Coach Weekly covers a wide range of coaching topics:
- coaching techniques and skills
- fitness
- psychology
- player roles and responsibilities
- planning training sessions
- player management and selection
- coaching children
- player safety
- personal development
- match tactics
- developing team spirit
- individual and team discipline
- warm-ups
- training through games
... and much, much more.
Here are five quick examples of recent articles.
EXAMPLE # 1: Coaching techniques and skills
The spin pass
Some skills are absolute "must-haves" for any rugby player, regardless of age. They are so important that you need to give them priority.
In each issue of Rugby Coach Weekly, we highlight a particular individual skill and show you the most effective way to teach it to your players.
Think of the spin or torpedo pass. It’s an essential weapon in any player’s armoury of skills… but it needs proper coaching, so the correct techniques are applied and the skill is used properly in matches.
EXAMPLE # 2: Player roles and responsibilities
Coaching positions you may not have played yourself
Take the number 10 position (or fly half, outside half or pivot player if your prefer). There are some obvious skills and techniques necessary to play at 10: passing, running, kicking and tackling, for instance.
But it is the range of tactics available to the player that sets them apart. Their actions can change the shape, even the result of a game.
In Rugby Coach Weekly, we regularly look at the key skills and tactical requirements for every position in the team, and describe ways to coach them effectively.
Real life, practical coaching solutions
EXAMPLE # 3: Match tactics
Breaking down a structured defence
In the early stages of every player’s rugby career, defence is a very individual thing. Each tackler focuses on the ball and the ball carrier is often chased by several defenders. Good individual running skills and basic passing skills are all a team needs to launch a successful attack at this level.
As defences become more structured, these skills are no longer enough. It becomes essential for teams to develop the ability to work together to break down the defensive line.
Fortunately, at Rugby Coach Weekly we have a host of tactics and training techniques to overcome even the most organised defence. They are tried and tested and fun to use.
EXAMPLE # 4: Coaching children
Managing concentration levels
Many coaches work with kids or start out by looking after a junior rugby team. Consequently, every issue of Rugby Coach Weekly features an article on “The Art of Coaching Children”. (Many of these articles would benefit coaches of adult players too.)
For instance, in issue 94 we looked at how concentration levels rise and fall during a training session. We then suggested ways to adapt your coaching to accommodate and make use of these variations.
Other areas we’ve looked at are: Ways to adapt training games to create “match ready” players. Using “Big Mac feedback” to motivate players even while criticising them. Understanding the benefits and limitations of TAG. Introducing new players into a team. The pros and cons of unopposed practises…
EXAMPLE # 5: Training ideas, sessions and games
Improving turnover play
Each issue of Rugby Coach Weekly includes practical training ideas, as well as sessions you can literally print off and take straight onto the training pitch.
Improving decision making and option taking are key parts of our coaching ethic, so our sessions frequently work at these aspects of the game, while also challenging the players’ skills.
For instance many coaches believe the team that wins the turnover battle will win the game. In fact, it is the team that uses turnover ball most effectively that will win.
In issue 92 we introduced two games – “two-ball” and “tackle turnover” – specially designed to challenge your players’ decision making when they have won (and lost) turnover ball.
Sign up to a 9 issue trial to Rugby Coach Weekly today and receive advice like this every week. All you have to do is print it off, read it, and use it as your blueprint for your coaching...
Of course, I won’t pretend that I know everything. No single person could possibly maintain the stream of expert information and advice that you get, week in and week out, from Rugby Coach Weekly.
That’s why, as editor, I make sure that I interview the sport’s leading coaches at school and junior levels, and quiz them about the secrets of their success.
I actively seek out our many members’ advice on what works, or doesn’t work, for them. Then I get it all into the pages of Rugby Coach Weekly.
Recently Norman Blair, who coaches in Ireland, sent in his ideas for defending against the maul. While Mick O’Reilly, who runs a successful junior set-up at Whitstable RFC in England, explained how he achieved better organised youth teams, on and off the field.
Pioneers of rugby coaching to help you
But it’s not just me who will be helping you. The real strength of
Rugby Coach Weekly is that there are two more highly experienced experts on my team, Colin Ireland and Paul Tyler. Between us, we have 40 years of rugby coaching experience.
Colin Ireland was a rugby development manager for the Scottish Rugby Union. This is the guy who has been responsible for developing Coach Education in Scotland for many years. Now he’s a full-time rugby consultant.
Paul Tyler is a teacher, a Scottish Rugby Union Level 3 coach coaching at Greenock Wanderers RFC in National Division 1, and a qualified referee.
When it comes to modern day rugby coaching, these guys know their stuff. And together, we have created what we believe to be the best possible coaching service for the junior game available anywhere in the world.
A "must-have" resource for every school
and club with new and improving players
Rugby Coach Weekly builds into a comprehensive, easy-to-use library of coaching information, covering all aspects of the game.
Soon, you’ll have a vast range of exercises, strategies, drills and tactics at your fingertips.

it to yourself as a secret weapon!
I urge you to at least give it a try. Because this is the kind of coaching tool that will ensure you’re one of the best rugby coaches your players could hope for.
NOW is the time to try something different
Think of it this way. If you really want to improve your coaching, and your players, you’ll need to do something different from what you’ve been doing until now.
There’s simply no alternative if you want to keep the kids enthusiastic, interested, and winning more games. Remember Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity: “Repeating the same thing over and over again – but expecting a different result.”
Rugby Coach Weekly will change the way you approach your coaching by offering stimulating ideas, tips and sessions that don’t take long to read, and that you can use straight away. And every week you’ll get fresh new information so things never get stale.
I guarantee I can help you win more games
– if you put in the necessary effort
Before we go any further, it’s worth making one thing clear. Rugby Coach Weekly is no quick fix, no easy substitute for hard work and commitment.
I cannot promise that it will take your team to the top of the league. As coach, you need to put in a bit of effort.
But if you rise to the challenge, you WILL win more games, and get more out of the lads. Take a look at some of these comments, sent to us by genuine coaches and you’ll see for yourself…
